A Song of Warrior
by Li Bai
From the Kingdom Zhao comes a turbaned wight,
With his curved blade flashing frosty light.
He gallops forth like a shooting star,
A silver saddle dights his charger white.
Within ten paces, he can kill a foe,
O’er a thousand li, traceless as a blow.
When a mission is done, he dusts his garb
And walks off, where he hies no one would know.
At leisure, with his men, Prince Xinling’d swill,
Afore his knees, he’d lay down his sword still.
He’d fain regale Zhu Hai with the roast meat
Or quaff sans pause with Hou Ying to their fill.
A pledge they made after three cups of wine,
Which outweighed five heights, mighty and divine.
Though their eyne were blurry and ears red hot,
Their spirit soared apace o’er the skyline.
They saved the besieged Zhao with mauls of gold,
Which shocked the Town of Handan with tricks bold.
O two valiant warriors of yore
Remain the talk of the Grand City Old.
Though dead, their gallantry shall never die,
Twixt heaven and earth, with whom none could vie.
Who’d write them down, like the white-haired Yang
Who wrote Taixuan, that doth all edify?
