Sloviansk The city we write from is at the heart of the war waged by Russia in Ukraine for at least 12 years. On the night of March 31, Moscows air force carried out a devastating airstrike on Sloviansk, dropping two 250-kilogram high-explosive glide bombs on a densely populated residential area. This injured several civilians including a 12-year-old girl and damaged about twenty homes and cars. In the following hours, the occupiers targeted the local railway infrastructure, seriously injuring four workers, one of whom was a woman.

An asymmetric challenge for Ukrainian short-range air defensethat continues the human and infrastructure destruction wedocumenteda few days ago, when on March 24 and 29, a similar attack resulted in civilian deaths in Kramatorsk including a 13-year-old boy and other glide bombs destroyed six apartment buildings in Sloviansk, leading to approximately twenty casualties, including a 9-year-old and a 15-year-old.

Donetsk Oblast remains the Russians primary target. The Russian spring-summer offensive of 2026 is underway against the Donbas Fortress Belt, and the large-scale mechanized attack wementionedlast Tuesday that was repelled is just the beginning.Accordingto Dmytro Zaporozhets, spokesman for the 11th Ukrainian Army Corps (which is defending the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk-Druzhkivka-Kostiantynivka area),the Kremlin aims to reach the administrative borders of this oblast by years end. However, Zaporozhets and other authoritative military sourcesinterviewedby Uliany Bezpalko for RBK-Ukraine doubt the feasibility of such an objective under these conditions.

What we clearly observe from the field is that the occupiers are attempting to lay the groundwork for the battles that will determine the fate of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

The main road supplying both passes through Izium, and the Russians are trying to disrupt it in every possible way.

Traveling by car is now nearly impossible due to constant drone and artillery attacks, as well as mines dropped by other UAVs.
A torment intensified by the new technology of selective terror.

As they retreated, the Russians also poisoned the wells and wrote ДЛЯ ВАС (to you) on the wreckage of burned cars, with an ominous warning that they would return. And here it is, the russkij mir (meaning, Russian world and peace, in their language).
This is what the occupiers call what they export to Ukraine: terror.

A terror that haunted us too while we were filming among the rubble of theDolynaand Sviatohirsk monasteries, which ended up giving us some shelter, albeit minimal.

Today, Russian snipers no longer carry rifles but joysticks. They dont expose themselves to fire; they operate remotely, receiving rewards for every cross, PRESS sign, or clasped hands they fire at.

We couldnt advance beyond Donetsk and Mykolaivka, because the Russian commands order was to press toward Lyman and Yampil.

Further up, the occupiers are trying to squeeze Borova. Even further north, theyve never taken their sights off Kupiansk.

And then there are Huliaypole, Hryshyne, Rodynske, Novopavlivka, Stepnenska, Zelene, Orikhiv, and the other settlements from which we wrote our most recent dispatches.
Because Donetsk Oblast remains the Russians main objective but not their final one.
