Joseph M. Scriven (1819-1886)

爱尔兰人，?父亲是皇家海军陆战队上尉，母亲来自牧师家庭。
他毕业于都柏林三一学院文学学士（Trinity College Dublin)。
1844年他的未婚妻因船难遇险。25岁他在伤痛之后移民加拿Woodstock。他余生致力帮助他人，是虔诚的基督徒。 1847年因病返回爱尔兰居住。1855年又回到加拿大生活。
1857年他搬到安大略省的Port Hope，在这里，他再次坠入爱河，然而，1860年女友又因肺炎去世。
在他67岁时的十月的一天，与朋友相聚后夜晚失踪，在安大略湖溺亡。安息在安大略省南部的Bewdley, Rive Lake。

这是他写给病重母亲的安慰信＜不住地祷告＞“Pray without Ceasing”(1855)。后来由Charles C. Converse谱曲为赞美诗，名＜耶稣是我亲爱的朋友＞“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”
