I Want to Borrow Your Eyes (English)

When I walked into the elevator lobby on the platform level of the Go Train Kipling Station, a lady spotted me immediately. There was no one else in the small lobby.

"I need to borrow your eyes." she said to me before I had the time to take in whatever in the lobby.

My eyes turned to her and I found that she was blind, with a cane in her hand. Beside her was a trolley case and a bag placed on it.  The bands of the bag were looped around the pulled-out handles.

I immediately realized that she needed my help. I pressed the elevator button and helped her in. She was not totally blind, in fact. I started to manage her luggage. She had no problem following me by using her vision and her cane.

We went up to the third floor. We walked through the pass over the train tracks. We descended to the second floor by the elevator after someone in the elevator said it was the level we could get a taxi. I did not think it was right but I did not question it. After getting out of the elevator on the second floor, I looked at both ways and confirmed that there were only buses on the level. I took the same elevator to the ground floor. We passed another set of doors. The doors on my side was locked. She asked me to use the other set of doors. It was again confirmed that she had some vision. We ascended to another floor and arrived at the street level. We walked out. I did not know where to get a taxi. I looked to my left and knew for sure we could get to the main street. But could we get a taxi by waiting on the roadside? I doubted. We stood there without knowing where to go. At this moment, a lady walked toward us. The blind lady asked, "Excuse me. Where can we get a taxi." "Just walk to this direction and you will find taxis waiting." She pointed toward Kipling Subway Station. I suddenly recalled everything.

We walked. I was in front and she followed me at the back. In the middle, she asked to pause and she took off her jacket. She said she was from Barrie. It was raining in Barrie. But it was too hot in Toronto.

There were three taxis there. She boarded the taxi. I returned to the bus terminal. I had missed one bus and waited for the next one to get home.

It was such a good experience. Had she said straightforwardly, “I need your help”, the experience would be much duller. I admired her use of figurative language to reveal her blindness, which showed her creativity. I admired her positive attitude.
